NMUG Discussion Group

Naples MacFriends User Group (NMUG and Naples MUG) created the NMUG Discussion Group on Yahoo early in 2003 to provide a facility for NMUG members to share their computer knowledge and to aid members in solving computer problems.  The Discussion Group has been and continues to be a valuable asset for NMUG members.

Two important decisions were made about the structure:

1.   The Discussion Group would be a closed group, limited to NMUG members.  This has precluded “spammers” and others from latching onto our e-mail addresses and flooding our inboxes with “junk”.  It also means that comments, questions and answers are attributable to a specific NMUG member.

2.   The group was NOT set up with an active “Moderator”.  A moderator reviews each message for appropriateness and permits it to be posted or passes the message back to the originator for correction.  The club depends upon the good sense and responsibility of each member.

 Examine Discussion Group Messages

NMUG’s Yahoo Discussion Group retains an on-line Archive of past messages sent and received by NMUG members.  The current archive contains almost 7000 messages.

An extensive description of the methods available (to NMUG members) to examine these messages is provided at a linked site.  Click here for the details.

Manage delivery of Discussion Group Messages

When you have a Yahoo ID you have the ability to manage how NMUG’s Discussion Group Messages are sent to you.  This will be covered in more detail but there are 4 options that you can set.  Click here for the details.

Too Many messages? Get in control of them

The Discussion Group is very active. This means that there are many messages sent out by Yahoo each day. They don’t have to fill your Inbox. Instead the use of a dedicated mailbox for NMUG messages and Mail Rules can bring order from chaos.

Click HERE to link to a descriptive article on how to set create the mailbox and the Rules.

When Responding to Discussion Group Messages

The Rules and Special mailbox tips covered in the above section properly gives guidance on the incoming, received email messages. BUT the problem of Too Many Messages often arises from bad habits on the part of our members

Don’t SPAM the group with unnecessary messages. Click HERE for guidance on good practices to follow.

 New NMUG Members

New members receive an “Invitation” to join the Discussion Group via an e-mail message from the moderator of the group.  A full description of the invitation process is at this link.  Click here for a step-by-step illustration of the enrollment process.

If you are a new member, the NMUG welcomes you and encourages you to complete the Discussion Group enrollment process.

It is preferred that members use the e-mail address recorded in the Club’s database for their Discussion Group messages.  This is to help assure that only NMUG members are participating.

Upgrade to Full Capability

Some NMUG members have a limited function “membership” in the Discussion Group that restricts them to only submitting and receiving messages.  They do not have the benefit of Examining Messages detailed above.  Neither do they have the capability to Manage the Delivery of Messages detailed above.

Two procedures to Upgrade their membership to full capability are detailed in the following link.  Click here for more information.
